Rooftops
Rooftops is a fun competition where
players are challenged to play the soccer ball from one grid, through the
air into another grid, where another group of players must control the
ball (similar to soccer tennis). I call this game rooftops, because the players are told to
imagine they are on top of skyscrapers, I suppose the game could be called
skyscrapers as well!
The game can be adjusted to the skill
level of the players. The distance between the grids can vary from a
short distance of about fifteen yards, to a much more challenging distance
of thirty yards or more!
The size of the two grids may vary as
well. The smaller the grid, the more difficult it would be to place
the ball into the grid (ideal for accuracy practice), and the more
difficult it would be to keep the ball from going out of the grid (ideal
for trapping in close quarters). However, a smaller grid would give
you less grid to cover in attempting to receive the ball, so if you were
practicing moving to the ball and controlling it, then a larger grid may
be more suitable!
The rules can vary as well. I
suggest introducing the game with as few rules as possible, to allow the
players to get used to the game, before introducing additional rules or
challenges!
Start by awarding a point if the ball
ever goes touches the ground outside the grid (off the rooftop)! For
example: Team "A" kicks the ball from one grid (rooftop)
to the other, and it falls short of team "B's" grid, a point is
awarded to team "B". Another example: Team "A"
kicks the ball through the air and it lands inside the grid, but team
"B" doesn't control the ball well and it bounces out of the grid
(off the rooftop), a point would be awarded to team "A."
First team to reach 10 points, wins!
Additional Variations:
Earn a point each time you bring the ball
out of the air (touching it before it hits the ground).
One player in each grid or more than one
player in each grid.
Ball can land short, but not long or
wide.
Time limit ball can stay in grid before
kicking it into opponent's grid (2-3 seconds).
Bonus points for hitting the ball back
successfully with just one touch.
On two player teams, one player traps the
ball and the other kicks it into the opponents grid (rooftop). |
